XP Pro: server service fails to start -- cannot find path

Manually attempting to start the server service results in this curious error

could not start the server service on local computer.  

Error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.

"cannot find" is troubling. the service property page "path to executable" is blank.

While I'm sure most will agree I /should/ reformat and reinstall Windows I simply don't have the time for that endeavor at this time. Maybe after the new year I will. Thankfully this isn't my only system.Sad as it is the only major, noticeable drawback has been the inability to change users' group assignments.

Short of reinstalling is there a way to restore the service?

First thing I'd suggest is running Windows Update and getting all critical and security updates (plus any Windows updates you feel important) installed.

If that doesn't do it then a trip to the Registry is in order.
