    slow os

I have done this many times, this is on a laptop the hard drive was bad so I got a new one and put it in and reinstalled the os like I have done many time before but now it just seams slow, no mater what I do, open any program take a min and I always see the hourglass? I backed up the drivers, formated the new drive and did a fresh install of xp pro. I used tuneup utilities 2009 to speed it up and nothing. I pulled the drive back out and put it in a caddy and checked it for malware, spyware and viruses and nothing, any ideas?

its has a p4 3gig cpu with 1gig of mem ati 9000, so xp should run just fine. it was working just find and fast before I did this, the HD had some problems and was making loud noises that is why we replaced it.

There are a couple possible explanations to this problem. First a foremost, I'm under the impression that it is absolutely not your hard-drive, or really a hardware related issue.

One thing you may do is up the ram to 2 gig. This will be extremely cheap to do and should give you some more months out of this machine.

XP is the perfect operating system for a computer with this configuration. The slowness you're experiencing is not really a 'problem;' I'd offer up that maybe you've used new faster machines while yours was being repaired so now your expectations are higher?

This system should work great to run IE, email, and word documents, anything else will probably be pushing it.

    Thoughts or more information?

I guess that is a possibility. He seemed pretty convinced that he had a slow system after the hard drive.

We could troubleshoot all we want, but we could be wasting time if we don't eliminate the possibility, and there is a quick way.

Could you provide complete specs of both hard drives?

If we eliminate the possibility of the new hard drive being the culprit, then it would make sense to continue.

I think I found out what the problem is, the wireless utility to find wireless net works. I went to the HD manufacture website and got the utility to write 1's and 0's to it then did a fresh format and install. I loaded all the drivers from the back up and it is fast as it should be. I loaded the utility for the wireless card to find the networks and then it got slow and funny. its and old funny wireless card that takes an utility instead of letting windows do it. so I ordered a newer and faster one. as long as that utility is not on or running it works great. Oh I forgot when I install that utility I get a warning that it is not compatible with windows? and it is from the manufactures website and for xp ?

Yeah, considering it is old it would make sense that a new one will make things faster. It probably is operating on an older wireless mode.

So, it was a good idea to get a new wireless card.
