    Memory upgrade

I am having a lil trouble with my memory upgrade. I have an old Gateway desktop that I had laying around and I wanted to upgrade the memory from 32 megs. I went on ebay and found 2 sticks of PC 100 memory from Toshiba - each stick is 32M x 72 SDRAM. Can anyone tell me if these will work on my system? I don't have to use both sticks just one will be a big improvement over 32. I already tried installing one of them but on boot up the system gives me a couple of beeps and just sits there. No monitor no load up screen nothing. The seller assured me that the memory was good. Here are the system specs.

Thank you in advance for any help.

try the other one. pc 100 should be the right memory for that. i would say that stick is bad. 32 megs isn't a hell of a lot. i just threw away a stack of 128's.

I think I have tried every combination...each stick by itself in every slot, the 32 in different slots with the other sticks. All I wanna use this computer for is a wireless internet connection in the garage. I am using Opera as a browser but it slows down on most pages.

    Thanks for your response

If my figuring is correct then those are 256MB sticks (32M X 72) and I can bet you anything that that old Gateway board does not support that much memory in one slot. I would be willing to bet that the max memory that board can handle total is 256MB, with 128MB per a slot.

Yes,you are correct they are 2 256MB sticks. Make perfect sense to me. Well its off to ebay I go for cheap memory. Anyone wanna trade some 256MB sticks for some 128MB? lol

    Thanks for the info.

Before you order post back that Gateway model number so that I see if I can find out for sure the max each slot can hold.

I was previously thinking 128MB per a slot but that computer is running a pretty slow Pentium III which means that PC was probably one of Gateway's low end systems and it could possibly max out at 64MB per slot.

I'll have to go look for it.....I painted the case and may not be able to read the label. DOH! I am pretty sure it was one of there cheaper systems.

Can you read the serial number? I can run that through the support.gateway site and it will tell the model.

    Gateway Support - Specifications

Time for the scrap heap I'm afraid. Very unlikely that you will find what you need for that board.
