Ubuntu external drive issue

I have a laptop with Windows xp home installed on it. It no longer boots into windows and scanning programs are telling me the drive is failing. I have data on it that I need off there.

What I am doing is booting the laptop with a ubuntu live cd. This cd was burned about 9 months ago so it is not the most current version. I can see the files on the frive and would like to copy them to a external drive, but I get an error telling me that I can't do this because I am not the owner. Root is the owner and I am either logged in as Mark or ubuntu.

I have opened nautilus to get root privelege but the external drive is not displayed in that window. If I look in places outside that nautilus window I can see the external drive.

How do I copy data from the laptop drive to the external drive, which can then be copied to another windows machine?

Login To Root After that update USB Driver. you can see external drive.

The livecd is root just have to right click the drive icon and the window that pops up click the boxes that say read and write on both the drives I will check this tomorrow on my Ubuntu install. are they fat32 or INFS partitons?
