You should think about virtualization.
Virtual PC is literally a virtual PC. A computer program acts as a computer. And you can run programs. That is one way around it.
I've got a computer with Windows ME as the OS, I'd like to change the OS to Linux XP for experimental purposes but nothing happens when I try and run the disc. Is this because the OS is WinME and not WinXP? I can "open" the disc and see the files, but there's no install, can any of you Linux guys clue me in?

You need to make sure the boot order has the CD before the HD. To get into the BIOS, it should tell you to "Press xx to enter steup" or something. Then just find the bootorder and save the changes.
You need to have the CD in when you turn on the computer. You do not run the CD from within Windows.
