2 computers on network, 1 not getting internet

Hello ... thanks in advance for your help.

We have two computers networked and one now does not receive the cable internet or can use the shared printer. One is a Dell with Windows XP, and other is something with Windows 2000. Both are connected through a box --- would that be a router?

Anyway, both say that the network is connected ... and there are no error messages or messages telling us that the network cable is unplugged (unless we unplug it while testing it.)

The second computer just quit receiving the internet and can't print.

Is it possible that both computers tell us that the network is connected but the network card in the one that's not working is bad? Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your help,
    Marty

On both machines go to START, then PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES and then COMMAND PROMPT. Type in ipconfig /all. The IP addresses should be very similar (192.168.X.X). Are they?

    IP addresses

Thank you for your help ...

On the OK computer, the IP Address is: [removed IP]

On the other (non-working) computer, the IP Address is: [removed IP]

Not similar and I don't know what that means ...

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
    Marty

Doesn't seem like you're using a router. You should have a cable modem, then another box (router) that runs a line to each PC? Is this the setup you have, or does the modem go into one PC and the other PC connects to the first PC?

    Here's what it is ....

    Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4)

Computer #1 (without problems) is connected to a cable modem box. A network line runs from Computer #1 to this Ethernet Adapter box. Another line goes from the box to Computer #2 that is having the network problems. Both computers say they are connected to the network and to this box, but Computer #2 can't access the internet or share a printer or files like it used to for a very long time.

Hope that makes sense to you.

    Thanks again,
    Marty

On PC 2 try this ipconfig /release then reboot. Check the IP address again. Hopefully it will not be 169.x.x.x

    IP Address

I assume that you wanted me to do that on Computer #2, the one not working ...

I did what you suggested and the IP Address, which says
"Autoconfiguration IP Address" 169.254.31.149 ... and is the same as before.

Hmmmmmmm. I know I'm clueless and I hope you're not.

Thank you so much for your on-going help!

I have....i should say had a hardwire linksys network much like yours. A problem that i seem to find that many people have is not the computer it's the router. When i had problems i called linksys speant 2 hrs on the phone with them and they eventaully said bring the router back. when i switched it with a new router, bingo not a single problem. IDK y but i have read a few reveiws that say any of the linksys B products (especailly wireless) have quite a few problems (has anyone else heard of this problem?) i would try connecting each computer directly to the cable modem to make sure that it's not the NIC cards on either and then try swapping the router for a new one. It's worth a shot no?
