Blank Screen

Hi
can anyone help...I have windows xp...the problem is...when I turn on my PC the hard drive starts but the screen is blank...I have a speedtouch modom which also does not light up.
Sometimes when it does start...it has all these words and no's on the screen....like
Press f8 f9 f1 these words sometimes just stay there
what is going on

As soon as you start the computer are you getting anything at all or a completely blank screen? Any beeping noises?
